NVMe drives deliver many times the throughput and a fraction of the latency of hard disks and SATA SSDs. That makes them the right choice wherever many small reads and writes happen at once: databases, virtual machines, container hosts, search indexes, Ceph or MinIO clusters and AI datasets. The table above starts with servers from 4 TB of NVMe, use the second filter row for total capacity, number of drives and drive size.
Most NVMe servers come without a hardware RAID controller, so software RAID with Linux mdadm or ZFS is the usual choice. RAID 10 gives the best performance, RAID-Z2 or RAID 6 more usable space.
Both are flash storage. NVMe drives are attached via PCIe and are much faster than SATA SSDs, which are limited by the SATA interface.
The table shows the raw capacity of all drives. The usable space depends on the RAID level you choose.
