Bring your own IP: use your own IP space and ASN

Updated October 2026 · 5 min read

Bring your own IP (BYOIP) means your servers use IP addresses that belong to you, not to the hosting provider. You keep them when you move, and their reputation stays yours.

Why use your own IP space

IP addresses from a provider stay with that provider. If you move, every DNS record, firewall rule and allowlist at your customers has to change. With your own space you take the addresses with you. You also decide what runs in your ranges, so their reputation for e-mail and APIs depends on you alone.

Two ways to announce your space

With your own ASNWithout your own ASN

What has to be in place

Networks on the internet only accept announcements that are registered properly. Before your space goes live you need:

Minimum sizeIPv4 /24 and IPv6 /48 are the smallest prefixes most networks accept.
RPKI ROAA signed record that allows the announcing ASN (yours or AS215120) to announce the prefix.
Route objectA route or route6 object in the RIPE database, so other networks build their filters.
Letter of authorizationSome networks ask for a signed letter that you hold the space and allow the announcement.

You can bring your own IP space and ASN to our servers and colocation. Tell us your prefixes and whether you use your own ASN; we check the registration and set up the announcement on our network. If you do not have an ASN or IPv6 space yet, we register them for you as your sponsoring LIR, see our RIPE LIR services and the guide on getting your own ASN.
